Distinguished and Famous people from Campaspe
🏛️ John Allan
Kyabram resident John Allan became premier of Victoria in 1924 after entering the Legislative Assembly as the member for Rodney in 1917. His career reflected the growing political organisation of farmers, including the Victorian Farmers Union and the Country Party. He served as premier until 1927 and later held the agriculture portfolio. The Kyabram connection gives Campaspe a place in the history of rural political representation, when country interests were reshaping the alliances through which Victorian governments were formed.
✈️ Sir George Jones
Sir George Jones attended the state schools at Rushworth and Gobarup before leaving for an apprenticeship and later engineering study. Poverty had limited his early educational opportunities, but practical mechanical work proved valuable when he transferred into military aviation. He became a pilot during World War I and later led the RAAF as chief of the air staff from 1942. The district’s connection includes both birthplace and schooling, rather than an airfield bearing a similar name. His early training with tools belongs within the story of an officer whose later responsibilities involved aircraft, personnel and an extensive wartime training system.
